The Danger of Normalcy Bias
Normalcy bias, a psychological concept, assumes that because the roof hasn’t caved in so far, it probably won’t. It’s the same instinct that lets people skip the seatbelt on a five-minute drive or leave a spare key under the mat because “who’s even going to check there?” That’s how minds are built. They tend to extrapolate the future from the pattern of the past, and if the past has been good, the mind assumes the future will be too.
The thing is, companies don’t usually get breached because they were careless but because they were busy, and busy people build on the assumption that yesterday’s setup is still fine today. Security work is, in a lot of ways, the business of interrupting that assumption.
